Our Interventions

Sustainable Agriculture and Livelihood Model to Mitigate Climate Change Impact

The EIF team successfully executed a 2-year project under the NABARD (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development) - CCF (Climate Change Fund) initiative at Kairasol Village, Taljhari Block, Sahibganj District, Jharkhand, India.

The objectives of the project were to develop and implement a sustainable agriculture and livelihood model that enhances climate resilience, improves resource management, and boosts income generation for local communities, while mitigating the impact of climate change.

Ecological Conservation of Udhwa Bird Sanctuary, Sahibganj, Jharkhand

Supporting Conservation-based Livelihood Generation in Ahilyapur village, Pakur

You would have, at some point, treated yourself to a delicious meal on a Sal (Shorea robusta) leaf. It was not uncommon to find Sal leaf-plates and bowls at weddings and ceremonies, sometime back, before single-use plastic cutlery (*Styrofoam) took over.
It is essential to revive this healthy Indian tradition, which not only has far-reaching effects on the consumption side and helps arrest plastic pollution as a green alternative, but also has a significant impact on the rural or tribal economy. It helps to generate livelihood opportunities for forest dwellers, especially women.
Economically empowered women play a larger role in society. It also
strengthens forest-based rights.
EIF has taken a significant step in this direction, renewing its commitment to conservation-based livelihood generation by setting up a unit of manually operated leaf plate and leaf-bowl (*donna) making machines. Training was also organized by the foundation for an initial group of 5 women from the tribal community of Alhilyapur village, Maheshpur block, Pakur, Jharkhand.
Small steps to big change!
Go green.
Say no to plastic.

Conservation of Maska-Laiya Chidiya
Jheel

In Maska-Laiya village, located in Taljhari Tehsil, Sahibganj district, Jharkhand, and situated 33km from the district headquarters, a significant avian discovery was made. A bird census on February 4, 2022, documented 25 bird species at the "Maska-Laiya Chidiya Jheel." The EIF team has played a key role in its awareness, conservation, and been a part of the bird census each year, highlighting the village's potential. Furthermore, we also conducted a first-ever baseline survey, studying the dynamics of agriculture, livelihood, and climate change around Maskalaiya Jheel. Beyond birds, the 4.5 Sq.Km lake also hosts two tortoise species and occasional sightings of the famed Garuda, marking Maska-Laiya as a promising site for eco-tourism.

Reviving Community Wells to Alleviate Water Crisis in Tribal Village

The water crisis is a well-known issue. And villages are hit hard, with little or invisible focus. As summer peaks, so does the problem.
In our string of continued efforts, we went ahead with a significant step on this day of Earth Day ’22. In the process of water conservation, it is essential to revitalize defunct or unused wells, ponds, and water enclosures. A concrete-walled well, which had fallen into disuse, was taken up for cleaning and made usable again.
A drop of water saved is a life saved.

Plantation Drives and Conversation of Indigenous Species

EIF regularly advocates for afforestation and plantation drives. On the occasion of UN UN-designated "International Day of the World
indigenous people"- 9th August 2021, approximately 500 different species of plants were planted in Ranga Dharampur canal (Pathna). This was to sensitize people on the importance of plantation and forest cover, and also highlight the valuable contribution made by indigenous people towards the conservation of
nature.
